How to Pair a Single Replacement Earbud to Your Case (All Brands)

By BrokenGadgets.in · March 4, 2026 · 6 min read

The single most common question we get at BrokenGadgets.in is: "I bought a replacement bud — now how do I make it work with my case?" The good news is that for almost every brand, the answer is simple, takes under two minutes, and needs no special tools. The key fact to understand is this: a true wireless earbud pairs to its charging case, not directly to the other earbud. When you drop a fresh bud into your case, the case re-syncs both buds together so they play in stereo. This guide walks through the exact steps for every major brand sold in India, plus what to do when pairing fails.

Before you start: Make sure your replacement bud and your case are the same model and generation. An AirPods Pro 2 bud will not pair with an AirPods Pro 1 case. Charge both the case and the new bud to at least 50% before pairing.

The Universal 3-Step Method (Works for Most Brands)

  1. Put both buds in the case — your existing bud and the new replacement — and close the lid for 30 seconds. This lets the case detect both and attempt an automatic re-sync.
  2. Open the lid near your phone. Many brands re-pair silently here. Play a song and check that both sides produce sound.
  3. If only one side plays, perform a factory reset of the case (steps below per brand) and pair the whole set to your phone again as if it were new.

That covers roughly 8 out of 10 cases. The rest just need a brand-specific reset.

Apple AirPods (All Generations)

AirPods are the easiest. Place both buds in the case, keep the lid open, and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber a few times and then white. On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth, forget the AirPods, then bring the open case close and re-pair. The new bud inherits your case's identity automatically. If your iPhone names them correctly and both sides play, you are done.

One quirk: if your replacement bud has a different firmware version than your old bud, leave both in the closed case connected to power for 30–45 minutes. AirPods update firmware silently, and a mismatch can cause one bud to sound quieter or cut out until they match.

Samsung Galaxy Buds

Open the Galaxy Wearable app, remove the existing pairing, then put both buds in the case. Hold both touchpads (or use the app's "reset" option under settings) until the LED blinks. Re-open the app and pair fresh. Galaxy Buds are model-strict, so a Buds2 bud will not work in a Buds2 Pro case — double check the exact name printed on the bud stem or inside the case lid.

Sony WF Series

Sony buds need a case reset. Put both buds in, leave the lid open, and touch and hold both earbuds for about 15 seconds until you see the indicator flash. Then initialise from the Sony Headphones Connect app. Sony is one of the few brands where pairing a mismatched-firmware bud can disable noise cancelling on one side, so always let them update fully before judging the result.

boAt, Noise, JBL, OnePlus & Other Budget TWS

Most budget Indian brands use a simple "clear pairing memory" reset. The universal trick that works on the majority of them:

If you end up with two separate Bluetooth entries (e.g. "boAt Airdopes-L" and "-R"), that means the buds never linked to each other — repeat the reset with both buds out of the case at the same time.

Why Buying a Single Bud Beats Buying a New Pair

Because the bud pairs to the case and not to its twin, a replacement is functionally identical to the bud you lost — same sound, same controls, same battery profile. There is no "downgrade" from mixing a used bud with your existing set, as long as the model matches. That is the whole reason single-bud replacement works: the engineering already supports it. You are simply sourcing the missing half from someone who lost the opposite side.

Once your set is paired and playing in stereo again, do a quick check of the touch controls on the new bud (play/pause, skip, volume) and confirm the microphone works on a test call. If everything responds, your pair is as good as new — for a fraction of the cost of replacing both.
